Volunteer Service Day Benefits Camp Courant and Hands on Hartford

June 18, 2013

Hartford’s Camp Courant was visited by more than 80 attorneys from the firm to help with a major cleanup effort in preparation of the camp’s 119th season. The largest free day camp in the nation, Camp Courant’s summer program provides more than 1,100 needy children in Hartford with recreational, educational and cultural activities, as well as transportation, meals and health care screenings.

Shipman & Goodwin devoted its annual lawyers' community day to a variety of “sprucing up” projects, including: cleaning up the grounds, nature trail, ropes course, classrooms and pool area locker rooms; gardening and landscaping; repairing picnic tables; and painting walls and murals. In addition, the firm donated $1,000 collected from attorney and staff contributions. “The Shipman & Goodwin team should be very proud of their efforts in making a true difference for Hartford’s children,” said Josh Reese, Camp Courant’s Executive Director.

Hands on Hartford’s Backpack Nutrition Program also received more than $500 and 425 pounds of kid-friendly food items from contributions made by attorneys and staff. Each Friday, the Backpack Nutrition Program distributes backpacks of food to approximately 275 children who might not have enough to eat at home on weekends.
