Shipman & Goodwin Weighed in With Aetna on Data Security for New App

February 22, 2019

Aetna, a CVS Health business, engaged Shipman & Goodwin’s Data Privacy and Protection practice to provide guidance on the user privacy and data security aspects of its new Attain by AetnaSM app during the development and launch phases. Attain is a combination health tracker and reminder app designed by Aetna in collaboration with Apple.

Attain is a voluntary program for Aetna members that will provide personalized goals and track daily activity levels through the use of an Apple Watch®. The app will also suggest healthy activities (e.g., take 3 brisk 10-minute walks) and reward members for taking action to improve their health and well-being.

Users determine what information they want to share and can discontinue using Attain at any time. All Attain health data is encrypted on the device, in transit and on Aetna and Apple servers, where it will be stored in a highly secure environment using industry-leading practices fully in compliance with HIPAA. “Privacy is a core value of Aetna, and we are honored that they selected our team to support them in bringing this cutting-edge product to market,” said William Roberts, Co-Chair of the firm’s Data Privacy and Protection practice.
