Shipman’s criminal defense team has experience representing individuals charged with a variety of offenses in state and federal courts, including murder, manslaughter, vehicular homicide, negligent homicide, sexual assault, spousal sexual assault, risk of injury to a minor, DUI, narcotics and other drug offenses, robbery, larceny, forgery, bank fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud, mortgage fraud, making false statements to the government, computer crimes, perjury, gun crimes, securities fraud, welfare fraud, and healthcare fraud. We also have an extensive background in criminal appellate defense, having briefed and argued many cases in both the Connecticut Appellate and Supreme Courts.
Trial Practice
Our lawyers have obtained favorable dispositions in serious felony trials and evidentiary hearings including murder, sexual assault, conspiracy, drug offenses, ERISA fraud, antitrust violations, Hobbes Act violations, robbery, interstate transportation of stolen money and money laundering. They have also negotiated numerous successful plea bargains in which the charges were reduced or dropped. The team also represents clients in government investigations and white collar criminal matters, including those involving allegations of fraud, public corruption, and export violations.
Post-Conviction: Appellate and habeas corpus
Our lawyers have obtained vacated convictions and reversals of convictions in misdemeanor and felony cases including sexual assault, risk of injury to a minor, stalking, assault on a peace officer, interfering with a peace officer, criminal mischief and breach of peace.
Members of Shipman’s criminal team are members of the Criminal Justice Act Panel, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association. They are regularly called upon to present to other criminal lawyers on best trial practices and trial skills, as well as on subjects such as Technology for the Criminal Defense Attorney, Sex Assault Negotiating Tactics, Confessions and Their Suppression, and Litigating Parallel Civil and Criminal Cases. The criminal defense group includes a former President of the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, a former 18-year Supreme Court Justice, a Chief of Legal Services for the Connecticut's Office of the Chief Public Defender, and an instructor at UConn's Criminal Clinic.
