Amidst a growing and heated debate over the country’s immigration policies in the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election and the ensuing presidential executive orders tightening immigration policies, Connecticut continues to work locally to accommodate those refugees arriving from countries such as Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Eritrea and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Churches, mosques, and individuals in our community are increasingly inquiring about and assisting with resettlement processes.  We will hear from panelists on the front lines of the selection, vetting and resettlement processes by which refugees come to our state. Topics of discussion include:

  • Who is a refugee and how many are coming to Connecticut?
  • The selection and vetting process abroad
  • The role of local agencies in the resettlement process
  • The impact of executive orders on refugee processes
  • Legal status and rights of refugees in Connecticut
  • Potential community involvement

Our panelists will share their insights and answer questions regarding our state’s diverse refugee population.  For more perspective on refugees’ personal experiences, we invite you to view an 11-minute documentary titled “First Night in America” and produced by The New York Times. An optional viewing of “First Night in America” will also follow our discussion.

This presentation is the tenth of the Firm’s In Community series, presentations focusing on a variety of issues facing our workforce and community.
