October 18, 2013

The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) is the premier global trade association of the shopping center industry. Their annual 3-day US Shopping Center Law Conference took place in San Diego, California from October 16th-19th. Conference attendees had the opportunity to interact with real estate attorneys from around the country as they discussed legal issues and learned how to overcome pitfalls to maximize the success of projects and find opportunities.

Both Kent Nevins and Lou Schatz were selected from a nationwide pool of applicants to be featured speakers at two separate workshops.

Kent Nevins co-presented a workshop entitled, Disclosing the Secrets about Confidentiality Agreements”. The workshop covered how and when confidentiality agreements are used in real estate transactions, including a discussion of hot topics in the area. This interactive session provided practical advice based upon recent deal experience and case law.

Lou Schatz co-presented a workshop entitled Current Tax Issues Involving Shopping Center Leases and Operations”. This workshop addressed a variety of the most important federal income tax issues for both landlords and tenants. Among the issues discussed were the treatment of tenant improvements, payments for options, special considerations arising from REIT ownership, and alternative energy incentives.
