Shipman & Goodwin LLP is pleased to announce that Alfredo Fernández has been named to the Hartford Business Journal’s 2023 40 Under Forty list. Alfredo was recognized for leading both the Manufacturing industry team and the International Trade practice at Shipman and for his unique approach to clients’ problems through both a legal and technical lens. Alfredo was also recognized for his leadership in diversity, equity and inclusion within the firm and the community.
“We congratulate Alfredo and are happy to see him recognized for his impressive business leadership,” said Managing Partner Leander Dolphin. “Alfredo is a great communicator and takes on every challenge that is presented to him with enthusiasm, diligence and aplomb. He leads by example, serving as a mentor to junior lawyers, and as a role model not only in the legal industry, but in the Hartford community and beyond.”
Alfredo started his professional journey as an aerospace engineer and joined Shipman immediately following his graduation from law school. Because of his education and experience as an aerospace engineer, Alfredo looks at clients’ problems through both a legal and technical lens. He has spent more than a decade advising regional and national manufacturing, technology, education and real estate organizations on environmental and international trade matters. He distinguished himself as a member of the firm’s national environmental practice, advising clients on environmental, health and safety issues and he leads the firm’s international trade practice. He became a partner in January of 2021, and since then, he has also assumed leadership of the Manufacturing industry team at Shipman.
“I’m honored to be included along with other young leaders in the Hartford area doing such meaningful work,” said Fernández. “I have always strived to lead by example and hope the qualifications of this year’s great class inspire others in the Hartford area to make great efforts in their professional careers, their community and their personal lives.”
Beyond his demonstrated leadership in multiple areas of legal practice, Alfredo also serves as Chair of the firm’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, spearheading initiatives designed to increase DEI within the firm, the legal profession and in our community. In keeping with his desire to promote diversity, equity and inclusion, Alfredo has volunteered with Statewide Legal Services of Connecticut, working as part of their Pro Bono Security Deposit Clinic, and with the Hartford Public Library as part of their Pro Bono Naturalization Clinic, where his fluency in Spanish has been an undeniable asset. Alfredo currently serves on the board of CONNSTEP and the Connecticut Hispanic Bar Association, where he is also a past president.
