Shipman & Goodwin lawyers, Greg Muccilli and Aaron Baral attended the ribbon cutting for the new Q House, as reported in the New Haven Independent, which took place on Saturday, November 6th. Shipman has served as pro bono counsel to the City of New Haven and the Community Advisory Board of the Dixwell Community Q House in New Haven, and Muccilli and Baral donated their time, working diligently to assist with this worthy effort which culminated with the ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday. The mission of the Q House is “[t]o ensure that Black youth and their families, not to the exclusion of other youth and their families, have an opportunity to live in and benefit from society by instilling the values and knowledge which will enhance the quality of individual family and community life.”
The prior Q House was originally constructed as a settlement house but evolved into a community center, and was shuttered in 2003 due to a lack of funding. In 2012, the City of New Haven purchased the property and began the long road of reopening the Q House as a 54,000 square-foot, two-story building that will house the Stetson Library, the Cornell Scott Hill Health Center, the Dixwell Senior Center, and a new basketball court, recording studio and other amenities, serving the residents of the Dixwell and Newhallville neighborhoods of New Haven.
Muccilli and Baral were pleased to join the Q House Advisory Board, LEAP, the City of New Haven, the New Haven Free Public Library, the Cornell Scott Health Center, and the New Haven Department of Elderly Services in celebrating the revival of the historic Q House and its renewed promise to the community of New Haven.
