Alfredo Fernández Named “New Leader in the Law”
May 13, 2021
Alfredo G. Fernández was named “New Leader in the Law” by the Connecticut Law Tribune, which honors lawyers under the age of 40 who have made significant contributions to the legal profession. The Law Tribune honored Alfredo and other award recipients at a virtual awards ceremony held on May 12.
Alfredo is a partner in Shipman's national environmental practice and leads the firm’s international trade practice. He assists manufacturers, public and independent schools, colleges and universities, developers and property owners with internal investigations, voluntary disclosures and licenses/permits, transactions and business opportunities, internal compliance policies and agency inspection and enforcement proceedings. In 2020, that included working with clients on emerging contaminants such as PFAS and SARS-CoV-2, pandemic-related supply chain issues, bringing PPE and disinfectant products to market and helping exporters overcome economic sanctions to get products overseas.
Alfredo began his career as an aerospace engineer, gaining an uncommon business perspective and skill set that he uses in his daily legal practice to find pragmatic solutions and solve complex regulatory puzzles. His strategic and analytic thinking have led to many outstanding accomplishments.
Alfredo is active in his community and is an ardent advocate for the advancement of diverse lawyers, participating in many organizations that support Connecticut businesses and at-risk youth. For example, he is a long-time member of Shipman’s Committee on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, helping to drive the firm’s DE&I goals and planning community events that amplify voices of community leaders on important related topics. He also mentors junior firm lawyers. Alfredo is a member of the Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity (LCD), an organization that works to increase recruitment, retention, and promotion of diverse individuals within legal departments and law firms, and he also mentors law students annually through LCD’s program. Additionally, Alfredo is a member of the Connecticut Hispanic Bar Association’s Board of Directors and is past president of CHBA. He serves on Connecticut’s District Export Council, acts as Board Secretary for the Compass Youth Collaborative, and is a member of Leadership Greater Hartford’s Quest Program Class of 2020.
We are thrilled to congratulate Alfredo on being named one of Connecticut Law Tribune’s “New Leaders in the Law.”
