The Connecticut Department of Banking and the Securities Advisory Council to the Banking Commissioner are offering this free virtual event, moderated by Donna Brooks, a partner in the Business and Finance group at Shipman. Donna will be joined by three panelists: Peter Bilfield, a partner at Day Pitney; Mark Klein, a principal at Brody Wilkinson PC, and Liz Mullin, Staff Attorney, Securities and Business Investments Division at Connecticut Department of Banking.
As a new electronic medium of exchange, cryptocurrency (or digital currency) does not represent U.S. or foreign currency but relies on cryptography to secure transactions that are digitally recorded on a distributed ledger such as a blockchain. Bitcoin and tokens are units of cryptocurrency.
This lunchtime session will unveil the mysteries behind this often misunderstood financial product, including:
- What is cryptocurrency and how does it function?
- How are digital financial products sold and marketed?
- What federal and/or state laws may apply to cryptocurrency?
- Are cryptocurrency products securities?
- What risks do investors face when investing in cryptocurrency?
- Have regulators taken any significant enforcement actions in the cryptocurrency arena?
