Julia Wilde and Julie Reznik will be presenting "Risks, Response and Board Obligations: Mental Health Needs in Our Schools" on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 10AM. 

Rising statistics regarding student emotional/behavioral and mental health needs compel the attention of board members and superintendents. In this CABE workshop, Julia Wilde and Julie Reznik will provide an overview of school districts’ legal obligations to identify, evaluate, and plan for students with emotional/behavioral and mental health needs, and the impact of rising rates and associated costs of behavioral and mental health concerns. This session will review districts’ competing obligations in this context, as well as legislative responses to the mental health crisis affecting school districts.  The discussion will also focus on the potential liability exposure to school districts and offer practical suggestions for handling student mental health issues, including the use of social-emotional learning and other interventions.
