Workshop 01: Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS): Hot Topics for 2023 is designed to give owners, site managers, attorneys, regulators, and environmental scientists and engineers a practical, in-depth understanding of the complexities PFAS can introduce to environmental sites, and strategies to manage them in an uncertain regulatory and legal environment. This workshop looks beyond the PFAS basics, focusing on site experience. A dynamic panel will provide discussions on the following topics:

• Sampling biases: how can turbidity and particulates affect your groundwater sample results?
• Analytical hot topics: what you need to know about EPA method 1633 and some tips for using total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay analyses
• Risk assessment: understanding the proposed EPA maximum contaminant level (MCL), its potential implications, and risk communication strategies
• NPDES and PFAS: what is going on and what to expect
• Fate & Transport and Forensics: special look at septic systems, SPLP data, and other forensics case studies
• The legal perspective: state legal actions against PFAS manufacturers, impact of proposed federal regulations, the multi-district litigation
• MassDEP: a summary of where the state is on PFAS and what is planned in the Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup, a look at PFAS data generated from mosquito control pesticides and water/wastewater treatment chemicals, a discussion on how drinking water PFAS standards are developed, and some state-specific case studies

The workshop will conclude with an open panel discussion and sharing of ideas and experiences.
