Anonymous tips, words spoken in anger, violent passages contained in a fictional story submitted in a creative writing class, Facebook photos showing simulations of violent video games. Schools are asked frequently to address such conduct and many other situations to determine if a student presents a threat to self or others. Please join us for an interactive workshop focusing on the tools available to schools to investigate and respond appropriately to safety concerns which may arise out of student conduct.

Workshop topics will include:

  • Risk assessments and referrals for special education assessments
  • The availability of alternative placement options while the District is investigating a potential threat
  • The role of a school resource officer
  • How confidentiality rules affect the investigation and assessment process
  • Communicating with the community, parents, police and the Department of Children and Families
  • Disciplinary considerations
