Law Day 2012 Gives Area High School Students a Glimpse of Law Firm Life

May 2, 2012

High school students got the chance to learn firsthand about the legal profession as we hosted annual Law Day events at our Hartford and Stamford offices. Law Day is observed nationally on May 1 to celebrate a commitment to the law, with activities sponsored by Bar Associations, courts, schools and the like.

Shipman & Goodwin’s Law Day gives students from diverse backgrounds an inside view of life at a law firm. High school students from Hartford Public High School, the Girl Scouts of Connecticut, Hartford’s Capital Preparatory Magnet School and Bloomfield High School were treated to a “behind the bench” tour of the Connecticut Supreme Court, while Stamford students from Westhill High School, the Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE) and Stamford High School toured the Stamford Superior Court.

Students also participated with lawyers, paralegals and administrative staff in panel discussions about career possibilities in the law and related fields. And there was no shortage of curiosity as students engaged in a dialogue about students’ rights in real-life scenarios such as free speech versus freedom of expression and searches of students and their property.
