Six Firm Attorneys Receive "Lawyer of the Year" Honors

Six lawyers from the firm have each been named “Lawyer of the Year” in their individual practice areas by Best Lawyers 2013: Timothy Hollister, Hartford Land Use & Zoning Law; John Lawrence, Hartford Health Care Law; Alan Lieberman, Hartford Litigation & Controversy - Tax; Thomas Mooney, Hartford Education Law; Louis Schatz, Hartford Tax Law; and Lyn Walker, Hartford Trusts and Estates.

Based on more than 4 million confidential detailed evaluations, Best Lawyers, universally regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence for 30 years, designates only a single lawyer in each high-profile legal specialty in each large legal community as a “Lawyer of the Year.” These Shipman & Goodwin attorneys received particularly high ratings by earning a high level of respect among their peers for their abilities, professionalism and integrity:

Timothy Hollister, Hartford Land Use & Zoning Lawyer of the Year, handles a wide range of real estate and administrative law issues in land use and environmental matters and has represented developers, corporations, property owners, municipalities, boards of education, and neighborhood and environmental groups. He has developed a national reputation in land use law, and is widely recognized for his work in workforce and affordable housing development, wetlands regulation, and eminent domain. Hollister has also been active in the development of green building standards in Connecticut.

John Lawrence, Lawyer of the Year in Hartford Health Care Law, practices in the areas of corporate, private equity, insurance and health law matters, including mergers and acquisitions, corporate securities and venture capital financings, and joint ventures. John has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions of both public and private companies, recapitalization transactions and corporate divestitures.

Alan Lieberman, Hartford Litigation & Controversy - Tax Lawyer of the Year, counsels clients on matters involving international, federal, state and local taxation, and represents them in tax-related disputes in administrative and court proceedings. He also represents clients in the formation, reorganization, and liquidation of business entities and tax-exempt organizations, and in business transactions involving corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships. Lieberman co-authored, with the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services, new Connecticut corporation business tax provisions governing the taxation of financial service entities, and administrative pronouncements explaining the provisions. 

Thomas Mooney, Lawyer of the Year in Hartford Education Law, is active in all areas of school law, including labor negotiations for certified and non-certified staff, teacher tenure proceedings, grievance arbitration, freedom of information hearings, student disciplinary matters, special education disputes and all other legal proceedings involving boards of education. He is the author of A Practical Guide to Connecticut School Law (7th Edition, 2012), a comprehensive treatise on Connecticut school law used by teachers, administrators and board of education members throughout the state.

Louis Schatz, Lawyer of the Year in Hartford Tax Law, practices in the areas of federal and State of Connecticut tax matters with attention to the representation of closely held businesses organized as limited liability companies, partnerships and S corporations; real estate joint ventures; and the representation of taxpayers involved in Connecticut tax controversies (at the audit, appellate and court levels). Schatz is co-author of Connecticut Limited Liability Act: Forms and Practice Manual, the leading treatise in Connecticut on limited liability companies.

Lyn Walker, Hartford Trusts and Estates Lawyer of the Year, practices in the areas of estate planning, estate settlement and trust administration. She assists clients with the full range of planning techniques for tax-effective intergenerational and charitable transfers. She also prepares, and advises those preparing, probate documents, estate tax returns and fiduciary income tax returns as well as represents estates before the IRS and DRS on audit. Walker is particularly active in the area of charitable giving through her work with Leave A Legacy Connecticut and various not-for-profit organizations.
