Please join us for a complimentary breakfast seminar to discuss the new Connecticut law mandating safeguards for personal information, including social security numbers.

About the Seminar:

Effective October 1, 2008, Connecticut will require both individuals and businesses that possess personal information of others to put in place safeguards to protect that information from misuse by others. The new law (Public Act No. 08-167) will require the implementation of general protection and disposal policies and procedures as to all personal information. In addition, special requirements regarding Social Security numbers will be imposed on companies and individuals that collect them in the course of business. Individuals and companies who will be subject to the new law are advised to adopt new or revised policies to comply with the new law prior to its effective date. Violations of the law may result in civil penalties of $500 for each violation and up to $500,000 for any single event.

The seminar will cover:

  • What is "personal information"
  • Special requirements for collectors of social security numbers
  • Storage and disposal procedures for personal information

The seminar will also cover two existing Connecticut laws on personal information protection including:

  • Prohibited uses of social security numbers
  • Data breach notification requirements

The goal of the workshop is to provide information about legal requirements so that you will have the information you need to implement plans that ensure compliance.

Presenters: John Kreitler and Cathy Intravia are members of Shipman & Goodwin’s Personal Privacy Law Task Force and of the Business and Finance and Intellectual Property Practice Groups.

Coffee and light breakfast will be served. Please register by September 2. Parking will be provided if you park in the parking garage at 300 Atlantic Street. Please bring your parking ticket with you for validation. Click here for directions.
