September 30, 2014

Louis B. Schatz, a partner and Co-Chair of the firm's Tax and Employee Benefits Practice Group, has been selected by the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee of the Connecticut General Assembly to serve on the State Tax Panel. The panel, created by PA 14-217 (section 137) for the purpose of reviewing the state’s overall state and local tax structure, is comprised of experts in tax law, tax accounting, tax policy, economics and state, local and business finance. January 1, 2015 is the target date for the 15-member panel to release its recommendations for ways to modernize tax policy, structure and administration.

Attorney Schatz  practices in the areas of federal and State of Connecticut tax with attention to the representation of closely held businesses organized as limited liability companies, partnerships and S corporations; real estate joint ventures; and the representation of taxpayers involved in Connecticut tax controversies (at the audit, appellate and court levels). In 2013, Best Lawyers named him “Lawyer of the Year” in Tax Law for the Hartford Region.

Attorney Schatz is currently a member of the Connecticut Bar Association’s House of Delegates, and is the past Chair of the association’s Tax Section.  He is a frequent lecturer on federal and State of Connecticut tax, partnership and limited liability company issues, and provides annual updates on Connecticut tax developments to out-of-state accountants. He has presented to a variety of professional and business associations, including Connecticut Bar Association, the Connecticut Society of CPAs, the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, the National Conference of CPA Practitioners, the New York State Society of CPAs, the Long Island Tax Practitioner Symposium, the National Business Institute, the University of Connecticut Income Tax School, and the Foundation for Accounting Education in New York City. In addition, Attorney Schatz is widely published, including his co-authorship of “Connecticut Limited Liability Act: Forms and Practice Manual,” the leading treatise in Connecticut on limited liability companies.
