Four Attorneys Receive "Lawyer of the Year" Honors

Four lawyers from the firm have each been named “Lawyer of the Year” in their individual practice areas by The Best Lawyers in America® 2014: James W. Bergenn, Non-White-Collar Criminal Defense; Timothy S. Hollister, Land Use & Zoning Litigation; Alex Lloyd, Health Care Law; and James C. Schulwolf, Banking and Finance Law.

Based on more than 5 million confidential detailed evaluations, Best Lawyers, universally regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence for more than 30 years, designates only a single lawyer in each high-profile legal specialty in each large legal community as a “Lawyer of the Year.”

James Bergenn, Hartford Non-White-Collar Criminal Defense Lawyer of the Year, has over 30 years of experience as a trial attorney and practices in the areas of complex criminal and civil litigation. Mr. Bergenn counsels clients in a variety of significant criminal cases, representing targets of investigations, criminal defendants, grand jury and other witnesses, and corporate and individual victims of crimes. He works in cases prosecuted by the gamut of federal, state and local authorities.

Timothy Hollister, Lawyer of the Year in Hartford Land Use & Zoning Litigation, handles a wide range of real estate and administrative law issues in land use and environmental matters. He has represented developers, corporations, property owners, municipalities, boards of education, and neighborhood and environmental groups in administrative proceedings before local, state, regional and federal agencies and litigation in the state and federal trial courts; he has also argued more than 30 cases in the state and federal appellate courts. Mr. Hollister has developed a national reputation in land use law, and is widely recognized for his work in workforce and affordable housing development, wetlands regulation and eminent domain. He is a frequent author and speaker on land use issues.  

Alex Lloyd, Hartford Health Law Lawyer of the Year, has substantial experience in business organizations and reorganizations, health care entity structuring and corporate system development, and tax aspects of business organizations and transactions, including those unique to tax-exempt organizations. Mr. Lloyd is an author and frequent lecturer on health care, corporation, and tax subjects.

James Schulwolf, Lawyer of the Year in Hartford Banking and Finance Law, represents clients in structuring, negotiating and closing complex financing, investment, leasing, acquisition, corporate, licensing and restructuring transactions. His clients include senior and mezzanine lenders, venture capital investors (including SBICs), private equity funds, hedge funds, emerging growth companies and private companies. Mr. Schulwolf is a recognized authority on drafting and negotiating intercreditor and subordination agreements on behalf of senior and subordinate lenders. He lectures frequently on issues relating to commercial and real estate lending, intercreditor issues, venture finance and venture capital investment.
