Firm Sponsors Nat'l Bar Association Corporate Counsel Conference

February 25, 2015

Shipman & Goodwin is a sponsor of the 28th Annual Corporate Counsel Conference of the National Bar Association’s (NBA) Commercial Law Section being held in Naples, Florida from February 26 to February 28, 2015.  Founded in 1925, the NBA is the country’s largest and oldest organization of African-American attorneys and judges. For over 27 years, the Commercial Law Section has brought its members together with in-house counsel at major corporations who seek to increase the diversity within their ranks.

Robert R. Simpson, a partner in the firm’s Business Litigation practice, is the Immediate Past Chair of NBA’s Commercial Law Section, which was selected as the association’s 2014 Section of the Year. He will present MassMutual Financial Group with the 2015 John Lewis, Jr. Corporation of the Year Award for its commitment to diversity in the legal profession.

Entitled “Raising the Bar,” the conference examines critical issues facing general counsel, ways to increase African-American recruitment and retention among in-house counsel and outside counsel law firms, and the impact of effective diversity and inclusion programs and performance on future corporate success. It also features discussions ranging from best practices for privacy, data security, and regulatory compliance to strategies for protecting a company’s reputation, confidential information, and business when a top executive joins a competitor. The roster of panelists includes prominent attorneys from law firms and corporations around the country.

The Honorable Bernice B. Donald, a Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, is a featured speaker on emerging trends in the law.

Mr. Simpson and members of the firm also organized the much-anticipated General Counsel Roundtable, moderated this year by the Honorable Ann Claire Williams, a Judge on United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
