Firm Receives Presidential Recognition of Excellence in Advancing International Trade

May 19, 2015

Shipman & Goodwin was honored recently with the President’s “E” Award for Export Service, and was the only law firm to receive this highest recognition any U.S. entity can receive for supporting export activity. The ceremony took place on May 18, 2015 at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, DC.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker presented the award to Shipman & Goodwin partners Ross H. Garber and Glenn M. Cunningham in recognition of the firm’s significant contributions to increasing U.S. exports. “The President’s ‘E’ Award winners are outstanding American businesses and organizations that have played a crucial role in strengthening and growing our economy through increased U.S. exports,” Secretary Pritzker said.

Shipman & Goodwin’s multi-disciplinary team of attorneys assists U.S.-based companies in expanding their exports. The team, comprised of business lawyers, litigators and compliance counsel, works with clients ranging from Fortune 50 corporations to startups and small companies. In addition, the firm supports the mission of the U.S. Department of Commerce by providing legal and compliance training to exporters.

“We are honored to receive this recognition and, more importantly, to be contributing to the efforts of our clients and the Commerce Department to sell goods to international markets,” said Mr. Garber, head of the firm’s International Trade practice. “Our unique approach allows companies to efficiently navigate challenges that arise for U.S. companies doing business in foreign markets, whether they involve compliance issues here and abroad, financing, or the resolution of disputes.”

“We also use the knowledge and relationships we have developed by being a member of Interlaw for the benefit of our clients and to provide assistance to trade missions sponsored by the Department of Commerce,” said Mr. Cunningham, Chair of the firm’s Business Litigation and Intellectual Property practices. Interlaw is an international network of full-service independent law firms, located in more than 130 cities worldwide. “The ability to reach out to other Interlaw member firms around the world, especially when counseling clients on exporting and trade compliance, has been invaluable,” said Mr. Cunningham.
