Environment, Energy and Land Use Legislative Update

March 8, 2006

The 2006 legislative session is a "short session." Under the rules this means that the Legislature meets for three months rather than five and (in theory) considers only bills related to "budgetary" and "fiscal" matters or Committee bills.

The session runs through May 3, however there is a very short window for public hearings between each Committee's raised bill deadline and its deadline to favorably report bills(less than three weeks generally). So, if you are considering commenting on a bill, check the bill status for the bill you are tracking or the agendas for the Committee of origin for the public hearing date. The reporting ("JF") deadlines for the primary committees of interest here are: (1) March 9 (Select Committee on Housing); (2) March 14 (Energy and Technology Committee); (3) March 17 (Planning and Development Committee); and (4) March 20 (Environment Committee). A complete list of JF deadlines is available courtesy of the Legislative Commissioner's Office.

As in past years, this update contains bills before the General Assembly that may be of interest generally on environmental and land use matters. It is not an exhaustive list. The purpose is to provide a list of bills that can be reviewed at a glance and to provide an easy method to get additional information. Select the "Bill Status" field below for up to date information on each bill of interest.
